Vergil Ortiz Jr. will have plenty of muscle behind his already potent career for years to come.

The 2019 Prospect of the Year and aspiring welterweight contender has inked an advisory deal with powerful boxing conglomerate MTK Global, BoxingScene.com has learned in a development first reported by The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger. The two sides agreed to terms for a five-year deal moving forward.

In addition to signing with MTK, Ortiz has also retained the services of Rick Mirigian as his manager which also runs for the next five years.

“I’m very excited to sign with MTK as an advisement group with manager Rick Mirigan, who also happens to be the manager of my favorite boxer Jose Ramirez.,” Ortiz said of the move. “I’ve heard great things about Rick and MTK and I’m looking forward to the future.”

Mirigian is best known for his expert handling of current unified junior welterweight titlist Jose Ramirez among several other clients. Ortiz (16-0, 16KOs) and Ramirez both train under the watchful eye of renowned boxing coach Robert Garcia.

Ortiz becomes the latest American boxer to sign with the Dubai-based outfit, as well as the second from the Golden Boy Promotions stable. The unbeaten 22-year old from Grand Prairie, Texas joins fellow Golden Boy boxer and current 130-pound titlist Joseph Diaz (31-1, 15KOs) who signed with the outfit earlier this year.

“We are proud to be partnering with Rick Mirigian to work with the incredible Vergil Ortiz Jr.,” stated Bob Yalen, CEO of MTK Global. “Rick is one of the leading boxing figures in the US, and what he's managed to achieve in the sport shows that he's guaranteed to be a valued strategic partner for MTK Global.

Added Mirigian: “There are plans for Ortiz to be the face of the 147 pound and a superstar in the near future. We want to build Ortiz outside of the ring and bring in landmark endorsement deals, and look to help put on major fights around him at Cowboy Stadium.

“I'm blessed and grateful to him and his team for giving me the chance to help guide this next chapter of his career, I will give them my all.”

The move comes as a bit of a surprise to many in the boxing industry, considering plans in store with Golden Boy as the company moves on after severing ties with pound-for-pound and box-office king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Ortiz is considered alongside Ryan Garcia, Jaime Munguia and reigning titles Diaz, Joshua Franco and Franchon Crews-Dezurn as the future of the company, all of whom figure to be poised for red carpet treatment as Golden Boy continues business with sports streaming service DAZN.

Ortiz headlined the first post-pandemic card presented by Golden Boy, scoring a 7th round knockout of Samuel Vargas this past July in Indio, California.

Given the industry-wide relationships enjoyed by Robert Garcia, MTK and Mirigian, Ortiz is now armed with an insurance policy enjoyed by few others in the sport today.

“Ortiz has had a sensational career so far and he's destined to become a world champion,” insists Yalen. “We're extremely excited to now be working with this superstar.”

Details of the first fight between Ortiz and all involved parties are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
