Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz announced via his Twitter account that terms have been reached for a rematch between former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., and Filipino Marvin Sonsona. The featherweight bout will take place on June 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York, a card headlined by lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in his ring return versus former three-division champion Miguel Cotto.

Lewkowicz serves as Sonsona's promoter and also as the longtime adviser to Martinez. Vazquez Jr. is promoted by Promociones Miguel Cotto .

Sonsona and Vazquez met for the first time on February 27, 2010. Vazquez knocked out Sonsona in the 4th round to claim the vacant WBO super bantamweight title.

The two have since seen their careers head in separate directions.

Vazquez Jr. (23-3-1, 19KO) has struggled in recent years, with all three of his losses coming in his past six bouts. The second-generation Boricua boxer suffered a shocking 12th round stoppage loss to Jorge Arce in May '11 to end his title reign, and then dropped a decision to Nonito Donaire nine months later. A loss to Yasutaka Ishimoto last April was among the year's biggest upsets, and his close win over Guillermo Avila last September was viewed as a controversial decision.

Sonsona (18-1-1, 15KO) has won four in a row since the loss to Vazquez Jr. His most recent win was a career-resurrecting feat, surviving a brief war to bomb out Akifumi Shimota in three rounds this past February.

The rematch will be contested for the NABF featherweight title (North America Boxing Federation), which affiliated with the World Boxing Council (WBC) body.
