Wladimir Klitschko vs. Alexander Povetkin Walk-Out News

By Alexey Sukachev

“I’m not here to seek any excuses. I did everything I could”, said a fallen (now ex-) WBA heavyweight titlist Alexander Povetkin in a statement following his hard Saturday loss to Super WBA / IBF / WBO / IBO unified champion Wladimir Klitschko. “I’m disappointed that I was unable to land some of my shots cleanly and I haven’t shown everything I can do”.

“I feel myself perfectly, and I’m not broken – not by a bit. Only my back is a bit sore but nothing serious. I’m ready to move on, to train more and more zealously. I feel I will be an official challenger once again in a certain period of time. And then we shall meet (each other) again”, stated Povetkin.

Nikolay Valuev, a former WBA heavyweight king, appreciated Povetkin’s effort against Wladimir Klitschko and addressed some not-so-pleasant words to the winner:

“First of all I want to thank both Alexander and his team for a tremendous effort on Saturday night to derail hopes of those, who proclaimed that the Klitschko will get another kayo. Alexander was fit and ready. He delivered his prime game, and he hasn’t disappointed anybody. His team has done a perfect work too, as Alexander was in tip-top shape. And I also want to praise his fans”.

He then stated: “About the fight. As I’ve predicted before, up until the eighth Wladimir was holding, grabbing, hugging and doing all other sorts of dirty and barely legal, if not illegal, tricks to avoid in-fighting. Strangely, the referee has done nothing to prevent him from using these dirty tactics. Had I been there instead of Povetkin, I would have been warned multiple times and deducted several points for doing less than Wladimir. My wife Galina insists Klitschko should have been DQed and kicked out of boxing. Women are emotional, you know…

Back to the fight, I’m ensured Klitschko has chosen the only right tactics against Povetkin, but that tactics as his biggest downfall. Local fans don’t appreciate such kind of fight. The result is here, and it’s fair – I cannot argue with it. But the fight leaves more questions than it gives answers. I suppose we shall see another negotiation process starting pretty soon – this time over a rematch, which will bring by far more revenue for its organizers than this fight”.

Alexander Bakhtin, the ex-perennial contender and minor beltholder at bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions, who has retired earlier this year, wasn’t pleased with the champion’s activity as well:

“I cannot say Povetkin is a weaker boxer than Klitschko. It was about preventing anybody from doing anything in the ring”, commented Bakhtin. “Who boxes this way? He just hung his colossal weight on Alexander. Had Klitschko fought the different style, the outcome could have been totally different too. When someone puts his pounds on you, it’s damn hard to do anything even when you are physically fit. I can’t see anybody dealing with the Klitschkos now. But in a possible rematch, Povetkin’s chances can be much higher”.

The fight between Alexander Povetkin and Wladimir Klitschko was indeed a fight to the death – in a sad meaning of the later word.

Five witnesses were forced to ask for immediate medical help, three of them were taken within emergency ambulance, and one of these three has tragically died, while being driven to the hospital, from embolism.
