Uzcategui Drills Jackson In Two; Mendez Edges Vasquez

Jose Uzcategui picked up by far the biggest win of his career, scoring a shocking 2nd round knockout of second-generation slugger Julius Jackson in their super middleweight title eliminator Tuesday evening at Cowboys Dance Hall in San Antonio, Texas. 

Four knockdowns on the night paved the way for Uzcategui's big win, which will lead to a mandatory title shot versus the November 28 winner between James DeGale and Lucian Bute.

Jackson is the son of famed former middleweight champ and legendary knockout artist Julian Jackson. Yet it was his opponent throwing murderous bombs from the opening bell. Uzcategui caused damage early, landing in combination punctuated by a right hand to the temple for the bout's first knockdown.

The fight was functionally over by that point, as Jackson never fully recovered. Two more offficial knockdowns came of the round, along with Jackson hitting the deck twice more which referee Tony Weeks ruled as slips. 

Questions arose as to why a glassy-eyed Jackson was permitted by Weeks to finish the round, but it became a moot point in round two. Uzcategui never took his foot off the gas, sending the previously unbeaten contender to the canvas for a fourth time, this time with the fight immediately waived off.

The official time was 0:45 of round two. 

Uzcategui improves to 24-1 (20KOs), having won two straight. His lone loss came in a middleweight title eliminator, dropping a 10-round decision to Matt Korobov last June. 

The opening bout of the telecast saw Argenis Mendez manage a unanimous decision win over Miguel Vasquez in a frustrating 10-round battle. 

Scores were 99-90, 97-92 and 95-94 in favor Mendez, who apparently gained favor from the judges for being the aggressor. The win is his second straight since losing his super featherweight title to Rances Barthelemy last July, with his record advancing to 23-3-1 (12KOs).

Vasquez was docked a point in round seven for excessive holding, and was also warned for hitting on the break. The former lightweight champ falls to 35-5 (13KOs) with the loss, his second in the span of three fights.

In a televised swing bout, Ryan Karl overcame a rocky start to outpoint Alfonso Olvera over six rounds in the super lightweight division. 

Scores were 59-54 (twice) and 58-55 in favor of Karl (10-0, 7KOs), who was extended beyond the 4th round for the first time in his career. The unbeaten Texan was forced to contend with a swollen shut left eye after the opening round, but settled down and took full control of the fight. 

Olvera (4-2, 2KOs) was rocked and forced to take a knee in round five, and came dangerously close to losing a point for excessive loss of his gumshield.
