Romford's Tony Conquest delighted his home fans as he claimed the vacant Commonwealth cruiserweight title with a landslide points win over Australian Daniel Ammann at Bethnal Green's York Hall.

The 29-year-old went into the contest as the underdog but controlled the fight from the first bell behind a stiff jab and regularly scored with heavy-handed hooks.

It looked as though Conquest (13-1 5KOs) was going to get an early night as he rocked his 31-year-old opponent in the eighth round and had him in trouble on the ropes.

It needed the green light from a doctor to allow Amman to come out for the final round after he suffered a nasty cut to his head.

However, the Australian survived to take Conquest 12 rounds for the first time in his career but there was little doubt who the winner was going to be at the final bell and that was confirmed by scores of 118-110, 119-109 and 120-109 from the three ringside judges.

"When I was a kid I had a poster of Henry Cooper with his Lonsdale (British) belt and I'd love to win one - that's always been my dream," Conquest told BoxNation after his impressive win.

"I thought my performance was workmanlike. There weren't really any fireworks but this was a banana skin as Ammann has been in with some decent people.

"So I took my time and picked my shot. I tried to be controlled and not go wild. I did get caught a few times but I could see his shots coming, it was down to my lazy footwork.

"This hasn't sunk in yet but I'm ready to take on anybody now."
