Junior featherweight contender Tomoki Kameda defeated Yonfrez Parejo by unanimous decision late Saturday night at the Centro de Usos Multiples (C.U.M.) in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Scores were 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112 for Kameda, who improves to 37-3, 20 knockouts.

The clash between Kameda and Parejo, which was originally scheduled for last Saturday, was approved as a world title elimination fight by the WBA. The current world titleholder of the division is Murodjon Akhmadaliev.

Kameda was the more-technical fighter of the two throughout much of the fight. He worked behind a steady jab, but connected to the head and body with counter shots against the 35-year-old Parejo.

Sensing he was down in the fight, Parejo was the aggressor, attempting to focus his attack on Kameda’s body. Undaunted, Kameda continued to outbox Parejo, landing straight and lead right hands to the head.

The win by Kameda was second straight since losing by unanimous decision to then-WBC junior featherweight titleholder Rey Vargas in July 2019. Kameda last fought on May 22, defeating journeyman Hironori Miyake by decision.

The 30-year-old, who is originally from Osaka, Japan and is now based in Mexico, is the youngest of the three Kameda brothers. His other two losses were by close decisions to Jamie McDonnell.

Prior to the losses to McDonnell, Kameda held the WBO bantamweight title and made three successful title defenses.

Parejo, who resides in Barcelona, Venezuela, drops to 24-4-1, 12 KOs. He has split his last four fights with the other loss coming at the hands of Brandon Figueroa in April 2019.

Saturday’s card was promoted by MP Boxing.
