A rejuvenated Tommy Oosthuizen came back from a break of nearly 15 months to stop Daniel Bruwer in nine rounds to win the vacant WBA Pan African light-heavyweight title at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on Saturday.

Oosthuizen (78.6kg) picked his punches and landed with unerring accuracy as Bruwer (79.3kg) shuffled forward looking to land one big punch at a time. Bruwer, out of action for nearly two years, looked a shadow of his former self, but was always dangerous.

Bruwer was down in the fourth from a sickening right to the body, again in the seventh from a left to the head, and was sent staggering in the ninth, forcing referee Tony Nyangiwe to call it off.

The former IBO champion showed none of his inclination to keep moving backwards and stood and traded with Bruwer on occasion, always getting the better of the exchanges. Oosthuizen moves to 26-0-2 (16) and Bruwer to 24-7-1 (21).

In the main support, evergreen Barend van Rooyen, approaching his 39th birthday, was too slick for Xolani Mvubu, and won on a split decision over eight rounds.
