Hull’s Tommy “Boom Boom” Coyle (21-3, 10 KOs) has admitted that the occasion got the better of him when losing to local rival Luke Campbell (13-1, 11 KOs) at the city’s Craven Park stadium last summer and has called for a rematch to set the record straight.

Campbell stopped Coyle in the 10th round in August only to slip up against Yvan Mendy four months later (L 12).  Coyle believes that he can follow Mendy’s blueprint to notch a revenge win over the 2012 Olympic Gold medallist.

“I'd love a rematch with Luke,” said Coyle when speaking to the Hull Daily Mail. “Unfortunately I boxed the occasion that night, rather than Luke.  Going into the fight I thought Luke was unbeatable, but that theory was proved wrong when he lost to Yvan Mendy in his next fight.  He's not unbeatable, he's a special talent and I got beat, no excuses.”

He added: “I was so focused in getting to that point, it was like an achievement just to get in the ring.  So when I got there I felt I had done it when I should have been more professional. If I had performed the way I did in training before that fight, he shouldn't have lived with me that night.  If a rematch came available, I'd take it but I'd approach it a lot differently.”

Coyle has not been able to put loss behind him due to an injury-induced layoff; he is scheduled to return at the Manchester Arena on May 7, opponent to be announced.

Campbell registered a win over Gary Sykes to partially exorcise the demons from the Mendy fight and picked up the vacant Commonwealth belt in the process.  The 28-year-old has called for a rematch with Mendy, so Coyle will have to register a few wins before he is back on Campbell’s radar.
