In an unexpected upset, Veracruz left-hander Tomas Rojas won a majority decision over the heavily favored Jhonny Gonzalez, in the stellar main event which took place on Saturday night before a full house in the Arena Coliseo in Mexico.

With this victory, based on scores of 114-113, 114-114 and 116-112, became the new super featherweight international champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC).

In the fourth round, when Gonzalez was preparing his offense, there was a clash of heads, and Jhonny took the worst of it with a cut on the left eyebrow; and referee Rafael Saldaña took a point from Rojas.

After four rounds, Rojas won two of the three partial cards (38-37, 39-36 and 36-39).

The bleeding on Jhonny persisted, largely also because Rojas insistently attacked that area.

Gonzalez knew that working at the long distance would not bring him the expected results, so he applied pressure to be in the middle and get on the inside, to throw hooks up and down.

Rojas maintained his boxing based on skill and the game of using his legs, keeping to his right jab to mark the distance and land shots to the face.

After eight rounds, Rojas was still up on two cards: 76-75, 77-75 and 74-78.

Rojas took more confidence in this section of the fight, working with his legs and feinting with releasing the right, coming with the left to the face of his opponent, who remained in the center of the ring, looking to land.

In the last round another head butt took place, with Jhonny in a corner looking to digest the impact, releasing himself later with strong executions in the final minutes of the fight - but he was unable to finish Rojas and instead suffered a loss on the cards of the judges.
