Jones—whose brother Otha Jones III is a current pro—will next face Dominican Republic's Maria Moronta, with the winner guaranteed at least a Bronze medal. Moronta arrived to that point after beating Canada's Myriam da Silva by unanimous decision.

Scores were 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 in favor of Moronta, who constantly beat da Silva to the punch and never slowed down. The style matchup with Jones is a compelling one.

Alcinda Helena Panguana became the first-ever female fighter from Mozambique to compete in the Olympics. The long and lean welterweight looks to be a problem for the rest of the field, and certainly was one for Kenya's Elizabeth Akinyi whom she stopped inside of two rounds.

Panguana—who is joined by middleweight Rady Gramane (who fights Wednesday) as their nation's first to compete on this stage—established her dominance early and often, pummelling Akinyi in a one-sided round one. She closed the show with a pair of standing eight counts in round two, the latter which produced a stoppage at 1:26.

Next to face Panguana is China's Gu Hong, who outclassed Baison Manikon (Thailand) in a three-round shutout. Scores were 30-27 on all five scorecards in favor of Gu, the reigning World Amateur champion and number-two Olympic welterweight seed.

Busenaz Surmeneli (Turkey) ended the Olympic dream of Karolina Koszewksa (Poland), winning on the scorecards of all five judges (30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-26, 30-25). Koszewska made it to the second round following a shutout win over Uzbekistan's Shakhnoza Yunusova but is dealt the same fate in her own exit.

Meanwhile, Surmeneli moves on to the quarterfinal round where she will meet Ukraine's Anna Lysenko. The matchup was finalized after Lysenko shut out Oumayna Bel Ahbib (Morocco) on all five cards (30-27 across the board.

Surmeneli and Lysenko will meet in the first lightweight bout on Thursday.

Lovlina Borgohain keeps the good fortunes going for the India women's team, who put all four fighters in the Round of 16 and now one in the quarterfinals. Borgohain gets there after taking a split decision win over Nadine Apetz (Germany).

Apetz won by cores were 30-27 and 29-28 on two cards. They were overruled by three judges (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) scoring for Borgohain will next face Nien-Chin Chen (Chinese Taipei), who outlasted Angela Carini (Italy) to prevail by split decision. Scores were 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Chen and 29-28 on two cards for Carini.
