As reported earlier, Keyshawn Davis provided USA with its first truly dominant win of the Tokyo Olympics, following a three-round shutout of Netherland's Enrico La Cruz. Luke McCormack (Great Britain) moves on to the second round of lightweight competition after edging Manish Kaushik (India). It was never easy for the Brit, who had to pull it out in the third and final round to win by scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28, while Kaushik won 29-28 on the card of Lithuania's Gintaras Sniuksta.

McCormack will next face number-three seed and defending World Amateur champion Andy Cruz (Cuba) in Round of 16. McCormack's twin brother Pat is a heavy favorite to win Gold as the number-one seed at welterweight.

Hovhannes Bachkov (Armenia) was merciless in a three-round unanimous decision win over Alston Ryan (Anitgua and Barbuda). Scores were 30-23 on four cards and 30-24 on the card of Cuba's Alejandro Barrientos, all in favor of Bachkov who was credited with standing eight counts of Ryan in rounds one and two.

Bachkov will next face Javid Chalabiyev (Azerbaijan), who eliminated Yaroslav Khartsyz (Ukraine) from competition with a landslide win. Chalabiyev won by scores of 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Ryan was deducted one point in round three, adding insult to injury in a fight where judges scored 10-8 in every round with the exception of judge Barrientos merely issuing a 10-9 round.

Bakhodur Usmonov (Tajikistan) appeared well in control of Leonel de los Santos (Dominican Republic), only to settle for a split decision win. Usmomov won the fight on four of the five scorecards (30-27, 30-27. 29-28, 29-28) while de los Santos managed a 29-28 win on the card judge Sidali Mokretari (Algeria).

Luis Richarno Colin (Mauritius) outpointed Abdelhaq Nadir (Morocco) in a competitive Round of 32 lightweight bout. Colin won by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27, while Nadir was awarded a 29-28 score on the card of judge Zhang Guo (China).

The bout was nip and tuck, if not particularly entertaining. Colin managed to jump out to an early lead, winning the opening round on all but one scorecard. Nadir managed to take control of the action, though interestingly winning on all cards but the one judge (China) who had him taking the opening round.

With the fight in the balance, Colin surged ahead in the final three minutes to advance to the Round of 16. He will next face Gabil Mademov (ROC) who easily outpointed Damian Durkacz (Poland).

All five judges scored the contest 30-27 in favor of Mademov, who becomes the first fighter from ROC to win in Tokyo after the independent team suffered two opening round losses on Saturday.

Mademov dominated the action throughout, with Durkacz struggling to keep pace. The tempo of the contest remained in one direction, with Mademov closing the fight strong to advance in his first Olympic competition.

The winner of Mademov-Colin will be a heavy underdog in the quarterfinal round. The other side of the bracket will feature whomever prevails between Davis and Oumiha in what should have been—in a perfect world—a medal round matchup.

OTHER RESULTS

Harrison Garside (Australia) looked sharp in a shutout win over John Ume (Papua New Guinea). Scores were 30-27 on all five scorecards in favor of Garside, who next faces number-two seed Jonas Junias Jonas (Namibia) on Saturday, July 31.

Daisuke Narimatsu (Japan)—a two-tour Olympian—is the third member of the hosting nation to advance to the Round of 16 following a three-round win over Fiston Mbaya Mulumba (Congo). Narimatsu prevailed by scores of  30-27 on all three cards and 29-28 on the remaining two as he aims to build on his 2016 Rio performance, where he was eliminated in the second round of competition by USA's Karlos Balderas.

Japan has yet to lose through four bouts, with all four boxers winning by unanimous decision.

Zakir Safiullin (Kazakhstan) entered as one of the oldest first-time Olympians and now has a chance to add to his legacy following a five-round near shutout of Leodan Pezo Saboya (Peru). The 34-year-old Safiulin—who has waited 26 years for this moment after taking up boxing at age 8—won 30-27 on three cards and 29-28 on the final two.

Wanderson 'Shuga' de Oliveira (Brazil) was sweet in a lopsided win over Wessam Salamana (EOR). The 24-year-old Brazilian swept all five cards (30-25, 30-25, 30-25, 30-24, 30-23) to advance to the Sweet 16.

Awaiting de Olveira on Friday (July 31) will be Dzmitry Asanau (Belarus), who once again advances to the second round after soundly outpointing Obada Mohammad Mustafa Alkasbeh (Jordan). Asanau—who competed in 2016 Rio—won by scores of 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28.

Elnur Abduraimov (Uzbekistan) outlasted Chinzorig Baatarsukh (Mongolia) to earn a split decision win. Abduraimov won on four of the five scorecards (29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27), whole Baatarsukh won by 29-28 on the lone card in his favor.
