Thomas Essomba (9-5) added another belt to his collection.

The Cameroon-born man, who is a former English bantamweight champion, took on previously undefeated Sean McGoldrick (9-1).

Essomba, also the ex-Commonwealth flyweight king, took the fight on points at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool, exclusively live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Despite coming into the fight on the back of two defeats, Essomba was aggressive against the Commonwealth Games gold medallist from the start.

McGoldrick, cut to the left eye after the half-way point, suffered his first loss after tallies of 98-93, 97-93 and 96-94 were handed in by the three scoring judges to ensure Essomba had the vacant WBA Continental bantamweight championship wrapped around his waist.

The fight took place as part of the supporting cast to Anthony Fowler’s battle against Brian Rose for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title.

After the final bell, it was clear –– from the reactions of the pair –– who had felt they had won the fight.

Essomba said afterwards that he is planning to be more active and is hoping to build on this success.
