Henry Ramirez, trainer of WBC silver welterweight champion Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18KOs), welcomes the idea of a rematch with Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22KOs). This past Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Ortiz and Lopez went to war for nine rounds. At the end of the ninth round, Ortiz advised his corner that his jaw was badly broken and he was unable to continue.

Rolando Arellano, manager of Ortiz,  informed BoxingScene on Monday that his fighter will exercise the contracted rematch clause . But, the jaw of Ortiz will take several months to heal.

"He went into surgery and the jaw was broken in two places. There was a double break. The first break and then several punches later there was a second break. They had to put a titanium steel piece of bar in it and three screws in it. I came in and talked to the doctor. The doctor told me it would be wired shut for two weeks and probably about four to six months until it is fully healed," Arellanos said.

More than likely, based on the recovery time, Ortiz will not be able to return to the ring until the very end of the year or early 2013.

Ramirez has no problem with a rematch but he wants Lopez to stay active and they are going to explore their options for a possible return in October or November.

"They have a rematch clause but we are not going to hold Jose hostage [until Victor recovers]. He has to first worry about his jaw before he thinks about a rematch. It's one thing if he was healthy, which he obviously isn't. We're not going to be held hostage. We're going to see what's out there for Jose. Once Victor is healthy enough to fight, obviously we will explore the rematch. There is a rematch clause but we are not going to be held hostage by Victor Ortiz," Ramirez told BoxingScene.com.

"Realistically, Victor may be out until the end of the year. We are likely going to have a fight before the rematch - if there is a rematch, because that's what they're saying now. A couple of months down the line they could be looking at a different scenario."

If Ramirez had a choice, based on styles, he would love to see Lopez in a big fight against WBA/IBF 140-pound champion Lamont Peterson - who remains suspended for failing a random drug test a few months ago.
