BoxingScene.com recently spoke to Louis Fonseca, VP of Caribe Promotions, who is disputing the recent news reported on this website that super WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev will face IBF cruiserweight champion Victor Ramirez on April 30th in Moscow in an unification bout.

With the #1 rated contender Beibut Shumenov out with an injury, the WBA recently ordered a fight between Lebedev (28-2) who is promoted by Andrey Rabinsky's World of Boxing and the #2 ranked Yunier Dorticos (20-0), who is promoted by Caribe. Fonseca feels that the mandatory fight should take precedence before the unification bout.

"We have already reached out to Rabinsky. There is a resolution that will expire on March 5th. There is a 30-day negotiation period and then a purse bid. Caribe is trying to bring this fight to the U.S.," Fonseca told BoxingScene.com.

"We have a few networks interested. We feel that this is a great opportunity for an exciting Cuban fighter that is 20-0 with 19 KOs to fight a decorated Russian fighter. They say they are unifying but they need to follow the WBA rules and regulations. We have already sent them an email to make the fight and are waiting for their response."

The WBA under the new regime of Gilberto Mendoza Jr., who recently took the helm of the sanctioning body from his ailing father, has pledged to reduce the number of champions the organization currently recognizes.  Many divisions recognize "super", 'regular", and interim champions and several fights have already been ordered to reduce the confusion of who the real WBA champion is in each division.

Fonseca applauds these actions and says that Ramirez can unify titles with the winner of the Lebdev-Dorticos fight.

"The WBA is cleaning up the sport. The best are going to fight the best and give the fans the fights they want to see. The heavyweight tournament they have organized is going to be great and there are great things that will happen in the cruiserweight division as well," Fonseca told BoxingScene.com.
