Earlier today BoxingScene's Rick Reeno reported that the WBC approved promoter Sampson Lewkowicz's proposal to have eight man tournaments in the 147 and 154 pound weight divisions. The tournaments would end with a single winner in each division who would become the mandatory challenger to fight for Floyd Mayweather's title. Mayweather holds both the WBC and WBA's welterweight and super welterweight titles.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman believes that the stature and high profile standing of Amir Khan and Saul Alvarez likely will lead them both to decline participation in the tournaments which seeks to give the best welterweights and super welterweights access to the coveted green belt.  Khan currently holds the WBC silver welterweight title and Alvarez previously held the WBC super welterweight crown.

"It's not easy because they have a different level of income than most other fighters. If they don't participate that does not mean they will be out (of consideration to face Mayweather). There are many options for the boxers to take. Some may prefer to fight for a title with another organization at the last minute. We will try to have a system flexible enough so that these kind of surprises won't affect the tournament", Sulaiman told BoxingScene.com.

It is very possible that both tournaments may take over a year to complete and that Mayweather will be retired by then.  In either case both winners will be in position to either face Mayweather or fight for the vacant titles.
