Sergey Lipinets just wants the proper credit.

The welterweight contender recognizes that Lamont Peterson is 35 years old, hadn’t fought in 14 months and was stopped by Errol Spence Jr. in his previous bout. Lipinets also knows just how much trouble Peterson gave him Sunday night during an entertaining, back-and-forth fight FS1 aired from MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Now that he, too, has stopped Peterson, Lipinets hopes people will realize he just produced perhaps the best win of a pro career that began in April 2014. The 30-year-old Lipinets knocked down the always-game Peterson late in the 10th round, which led to Peterson’s trainer, Barry Hunter, throwing in the towel because Lipinets was punishing Peterson.

Referee Harvey Dock promptly stopped their scheduled 12-rounder with one second remaining in the 10th round. Peterson, of nearby Washington, D.C., announced his retirement to the crowd before leaving the ring one final time.

Kazakhstan’s Lipinets (15-1, 11 KOs), of Beverly Hills, California, hopes his decisive victory over Peterson (35-5-1, 17 KOs) leads to a welterweight title shot later this year.

“People will say @kingpete26 [Peterson] was old and done,” Lipinets wrote in a post to his Twitter account. “I resent the implication. Get in front of him and you’ll know. I did what I have to. Move on now.”

Lipinets expressed surprised that one of the judges had Peterson ahead at the time of the stoppage Sunday night.

“And as crazy as it sounds I was down on one of the scorecards,” Lipinets wrote in another Tweet. “[Oh] well I’m glad I didn’t leave it in their hands.”

Lipinets, a former IBF junior welterweight champion who has lost only to Mikey Garcia, also tagged @ShowtimeBoxing, @TGBpromotions, @loudibella, @PBConFOX and @StephenEspinoza in that Tweet.

According to unofficial CompuBox statistics, Lipinets landed fewer punches than Peterson prior to the stoppage (303-of-972 to 264-of-986). Before dropping Peterson in the 10th round, Lipinets hurt the former IBF/WBA 140-pound champion in the sixth round and the eighth round.
