Troubled British super-welterweight champion Scott Fitzgerald spent Monday night in a police cell after a confrontation with his former partner, which seemingly left her with a bloody nose.

The unbeaten 28-year-old was expecting a big year following victories over Anthony Fowler and Ted Cheeseman last year, but he has been struggling with problems out of the ring and recently had a spell in rehab after battling drink, drugs and gambling problems.

Police were called to an address in his hometown of Preston on Monday after an altercation. He was arrested and took to Instagram yesterday after he was released.

“Ta f--king da to the police station,” he said. “Twenty-four hours in a cell. That's some heavy sh-t. Anyway, I’m back out.”

According to Fitzgerald, he had gone round to the home of his former partner to retrieve a bike, but an argument broke out and he was arrested after being pinned to the ground by four people.

He then left a string of other Instagram posts, first offering to settle matters with some of the men in the altercation, before saying he would move to London and promising to sort out his problems.

“Now I’m facing everything,” he said. “You have to go through it, you can’t run away from it all. That’s what I’m doing. It will be sorted, I will be a world champion, I promise.

“I can’t wait for fight dates. I’m really looking forward to smashing everyone up.”

Later on, his Instagram account appeared to have been taken offline.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist had talked about a big outdoor rematch with Fowler at Deepdale, the home of Preston North End FC, this summer, although his problems seemed to have put paid to that before the coronavirus pandemic did. He had also been lined up for a challenge for the European title against Spain’s Sergio Garcia.
