Sandy Ryan has confirmed that she is interested in a contest with Makaela Mayer, after reports circulated that she was one of two names in the running to face the American.
Mayer could also yet have a return with Liverpool’s Natasha Jonas, who defeated her by the slenderest of margins back in January, but Derby’s Ryan – who trains in the same DLX Boxing gym as Mayer in Las Vegas – would be open to the fight.
“One hundred per cent,” Ryan said. “Whatever [manager] Brian [Peters] says. I’ll take any fight. People know me by now that I’m not shy of a fight, I’m ready for anybody.”
Asked whether she and Mayer had spoken in Vegas as prospective rivals, Ryan said: “I’ve seen her about, yeah.”
Reporting from The Ring understands that negotiations are currently ongoing between the representatives of Mayer, 19-2 (5 KOs), and Boxxer, who promote Jonas, 15-2-1 (9 KOs), regarding the viability of a June 15 rematch in London, UK. Boxxer is reportedly working towards promoting an event at one of London’s Premier League football stadiums on the date in question.
Their first encounter was regarded as an early candidate for fight of the year.
Immediately after the fight, the 39-year-old Jonas conceded that 2024 was likely her final year as a professional, having turned pro in 2017. She said Mayer was only behind Katie Taylor as the toughest opponent she had faced in her career.
If a Jonas-Mayer rematch can’t be agreed upon, WBO welterweight title holder Sandy Ryan (7-1-1, 3KOs) is waiting in the wings, and she hopes to be out again in June or July.
Ryan wants to quickly return to action following a destructive fourth-round stoppage of two-weight world champion Terri Harper, who failed to come out for the fifth round of the scheduled 10-round affair on March 23.
Mayer’s current standing, achievements, and growing following within the U.K. qualify the American as a viable and credible challenger for Ryan.
