Staples Center, Los Angeles, California - Sammy Vasquez Jr. (21-0, 15KOs) dominated and stopped Aron Martinez (20-5-1, 4KOs) inside of six rounds. Martinez was unable to continue after six due to a left elbow injury.

Vasquez's fast hands and combinations were giving Martinez a lot of trouble in the early going. Martinez being warned early on for holding.

Martinez cut the distance in the third, forcing Vasquez to fight him on the inside. Vasquez eventually broke away from the inside and went back to throwing fast punches and combinations from the distance. Martinez had no power to get the respect of Vasquez and did very little to change the pace of the contest. He was allowing Vasquez to stay a distance, shooting his punches and scoring. Martinez spent most his time being defensive and not firing back.

The fight was stopped at the end of the sixth round, after Martinez's corner advised the referee that he was unable to continue due to an injury to his left elbow.

Martinez was coming off the best year of his career. He lost a controversial split decision to Robert Guerrero last summer. He had Guerrero down and hurt in the contest. Martinez bounced back with a decision victory over two-division world champion Devon Alexander - one of the biggest upsets of the entire year.
