ANAHEIM - Ryan Garcia only needed less than one round to knock Francisco Fonseca out.

Not only did Garcia score a knockout, it was a devastating knockout in a type of performance that generates buzz and has casual boxing fans and teenage girls following the sport much more closely.

Garcia made quick work of Fonseca before a large and partisan crowd at the Honda Center. With the victory, the 21-year-old Garcia improves to 20-0, 17 knockouts.

Garcia last fought on Nov. 2 in Las Vegas, knocking out Romero Duno in the opening round.

Fonseca, who entered the fight unbeaten in his previous four bouts since his decision loss to then-IBF junior lightweight titleholder Tevin Farmer, figured to give Garcia a decent test.

That did not come close to happening as the taller Garcia imposed himself with his quickness and punching accuracy over Fonseca.

Garcia worked behind a jab, but was able to feint enough to have Fonseca open up so he could counter. During one sequence, Garcia was able to get Fonseca to open up enough where he connected with a vicious left hook to the head, dropping Fonseca flat onto his back.

Fonseca lay motionless on the canvas as referee Raul Caiz, Sr. immediately waved the fight off at 1:20.

"It was a good performance," said Garcia immediately after the fight. "We caught him with a little fake and caught him with that left hook. I thought the fight was going to go longer. I saw the left hook It was there. I let him get comfortable."

After the fight, Garcia was confronted by WBC lightweight titleholder Devin Haney, where the two went at it verbally before cooler heads prevailed. It is a fight promoted Oscar De La Hoya has proposed for Garcia, along with a fight against newly-crowned WBA 'Regular' titleholder Gervonta Davis.

Those fights will have to wait as Garcia will likely face Jorge Linares, who fought earlier on the card. Linares dropped Carlos Morales twice before ending matters in round 4.

De La Hoya stated he has reserved Staples Center in nearby Los Angeles to host the proposed fight sometime in July.

Fonseca, who resides in Managua, Nicaragua, drops to 25-3-2, 19 KOs.
