At 35 years old, Marco Antonio "Veneno" Rubio, has dismissed the idea of retirement. Rubio has put together a new team, led by experienced trainer Nacho Beristain. The Mexican veteran is confident with coming away with his hand raised to his next bout, on September 6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, against former WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell.

Rubio has been training for more than a month in Mexico City, Monday through Friday, at Nacho's Romanza gym.

After getting blasted out in two rounds last October by Gennady Golovkin, Rubio says he considered the idea of retirement. Rubio had trained for that fight with coach Robert Garcia on Southern California.

Rubio failed to make weight for the fight with Golovkin and said he killed his body while attempting to make the middleweight limit of 160. He feels a lot stronger at the new division limit of 168.

"Most of all I realized that I wanted to go on, regardless of everything, boxing for me is life, and I've always been motivated to play sports, keep fit," Rubio told ESPN Deportes.

Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KO) vs. Dirrell (27-1-1, 22 KO) will be televised by Premier Boxing Champions.

"I will always go out with a winning mentality, whoever it is. I like to go out and give everything, but things have not always gone well. I'm training hard now with Beristain. We have connected well in the gym, we have worked hard on strength, boxing, everything," Rubio said.
