Robert Guerrero’s team continues to call for a rematch with Danny Garcia, who topped Guerrero by unanimous decision this January.

They felt Guerrero deserved the win. And they believe the second time around will end with a different result.

“We know we won that fight. Everybody knows it. They didn’t win that fight,” said Ruben Guerrero, Robert’s father and trainer. “We’re just waiting for the rematch. We deserve the rematch. It was a hell of a good fight. Everybody knows it. They say it was close, but I know we won it. That’s all I gotta say. I know boxing. Just because he’s my son doesn’t mean I’m saying he won it, but to me he won it.

“I guarantee it, we’ll take him out this time,” he said.

Nothing has been set yet for Guerrero’s return, though.

“Right now everything’s up in the air. We’re pushing for the fight. We’re pushing for the rematch,” Ruben Guerrero said. “If we get it, we get it. If not, we move on. It’ll come in time. We’re going to fight sometime in July. That’s what we’re looking at. We’ll see what happens. We’re ready to fight again. Robert’s fresh. He didn’t take no beating.”

It had been a rough stretch for Robert. His last truly significant win in the division was a 2012 war with Andre Berto. Then came a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, a victory in a battle with Yoshihiro Kamegai in 2014, a loss to Keith Thurman in March 2015, and then a controversial decision over Aron Martinez this past June in a bout that saw Guerrero hit the deck. He looked better against Garcia, only to suffer the decision defeat and fall to 33-4-1 with 18 KOs.

Ruben would of course prefer that the record reflect a win rather than a loss, yet he doesn’t think the defeat is too damaging.

“Robert’s stock’s been up, Ruben said. “The whole world’s seen it. They know he’s a warrior. He’s a people’s champion. They saw the way he came to fight. He pushed the fight. Every round.”
