Frank Martin took offense to the prevailing wisdom surrounding his showdown against Michel Rivera. Initially heading into their 135 pound clash this past December, countless prognosticators viewed their encounter as an evenly matched one.
Yet, despite the boxing world expecting a close bout, Martin (17-0, 12 KOs) pounded the Dominican contender through 12 complete rounds. With the lightweight division becoming his oyster, Martin proudly grabbed the microphone before calling out the likes of Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, and Rolando “Rolly” Romero.
While he’s been mostly ignored, Romero’s trainer, Cromwell Gordon, affectionately known as coach Bullet, appeared intrigued by the two possibly meeting up in the center of the ring. Still, even with Martin working his way up the ranks, Romero’s coach views him as a tenuous challenge.
“We’ll knock Frank Martin's ass out,” said Gordon to Thaboxingvoice.
Romero, of course, is attempting to pick up the pieces following the first defeat of his career. On May 28th, armed with his brazen trash talk and pernicious KO power, Romero warned Gervonta Davis that he would be in for a short and painful night.
Nevertheless, Davis smiled before landing the fight ending blow in the sixth. While it wasn’t the end result he was hoping for, Gordon has remained both proud of Romero’s performance and optimistic for the future.
Before coming up woefully short against Davis, Romero garnered a reputation for eye-catching knockouts. With stoppage victories in 12 of his 14 victories, Romero has proudly boasted that he carries more than enough power to put down anyone who comes across his path.
As the 27-year-old sifts through countless options for his next ring appearance, Gordon reveals that priority number one for Romero is a world title opportunity. If, by chance, Martin attempts to stand in his way, Gordon will gladly accept his audacious challenge in order to prove a point.
Up until this point, Martin has proven to have a stern set of whiskers. However, considering Romero’s propensity for violent knockouts, Gordon is convinced that Martin simply wouldn’t have an answer for him.
“When you get hit by Rolly, it’s like getting hit by a super middleweight in the 135 division. Frank is not a threat to us.”
