Gervonta Davis remains the world champion Rolando Romero most wants to fight next.

If the brash, heavy-handed Romero cannot secure that high-profile fight, unbeaten WBC world lightweight champion Devin Haney is second on his hit list. Romero questioned Haney’s chin and his willingness to fight top opponents.

The trash-talking Romero was particularly critical of Jorge Linares hurting Haney late in the 10th round of a 12-round title fight Haney went on to win by unanimous decision May 29 at Mandalay Bay’s Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

“I’ll fight Devin Haney,” Romero said. “Sh!t, I mean, he’s chinny as hell. He got hurt with Venum gloves. That’s a joke. And not even just get hurt; he didn’t recover. It was like four rounds and he didn’t recover. So, like I said, I mean, Linares is nowhere near the puncher like me. Haney, I feel bad [for him]. He’s probably the chinniest fighter at 35, if not, you know, one of the most chinniest in the sport. He’s the Amir Khan of 135.”

Two weeks ago, the North Las Vegas native secured a seventh-round knockout of Anthony Yigit at AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The 25-year-old Romero (14-0, 12 KOs), who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather’s company, dropped a game Yigit three times on his way to a knockout victory Showtime televised as part of the Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano undercard. Romero floored Yigit once late in the fifth round and twice during the seventh round, which led to referee Rafael Ramos halting the action.

Sweden’s Yigit (24-2-1, 8 KOs) came in 5.2 pounds above their contracted lightweight limit of 135 pounds, yet that didn’t stop Romero from proceeding with a 140-pound, non-title fight.

Las Vegas’ Haney (26-0, 15 KOs), who doesn’t have a fight scheduled, still wasn’t impressed. He sent out a Tweet that read, “Rolly is a pile of sh!t,” accompanied by a loudly crying face emoji after Romero’s win.

Romero dismissed Haney’s harsh criticism.

“Haney is always vocal on social media, but doesn’t fight anybody,” Romero said. “So, who cares?”

Romero, the WBA interim lightweight champion, also spoke about taking his career to the next level versus Davis (25-0, 24 KOs), who is represented by Mayweather Promotions as well. Though Romero feels that should be an easy fight to make, Mayweather and his company’s CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, probably will match Baltimore’s Davis against another opponent later this year (https://www.boxingscene.com/rolly-romero-gervonta-davis-fight-easy-make-next-ill-knock-him-f-out--159188).
