In addition to his concussive knockout power and slick words whenever a microphone is present, Rolando “Rolly” Romero has built up his name, in part, by openly clowning his foes. But while his penchant for ripping his opponents has come across as hilarious, there’s nothing funny about the monumental task he has standing before him.

Although a site has yet to be revealed, Romero will venture off to the 140-pound division to take on current WBA super lightweight titlist, Alberto Puello on May 13th.

Undefeated during his time in the pros, the 28-year-old solidified himself as one of the division’s elite following his championship victory over Botirzhon Akhmedov in his last ring outing. Romero, all along, has observed the Dominican native from a distance.

After further analysis, Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) clutches his chin in astonishment. While he normally gives his upcoming opponents little to no credit, in the case of Puello, the pugnacious contender knows good and well that his newfound rival has a long list of physical tools that could become problematic come fight night.

“Puello’s long, he’s tricky,” said Romero to FightHype.com recently. “He’s a world champion. He earned his belt, he’s a world champion. I can’t really say anything negative about him. He’s a difficult fight.”

For the majority of Romero’s career, he’s enjoyed overwhelming success at 135 pounds. After vacillating between the lightweight and super lightweight divisions, however, Romero has ostensibly washed his hands of the lower weight class.

Prior to making his decision, the 27-year-old attempted to permanently shut the mouth of longtime rival, Gervonta Davis. His hubris-filled attitude and immense self-belief, nevertheless, did little to help him during their May of 2022 showdown. With Davis mercilessly turning out his lights in the sixth round, Romero has done his best to place his shortcomings behind him.

His defeat, though painful, is now a thing of the past. If, of course, his championship dreams become a reality.

“Gonna be world champion May 13th.”
