Adrian ‘Sharky’ Servin took a big risk in moving up in weight and going through with a fight against an opponent who came in well over the limit.

It ultimately cost the Phoenix-based prospect his perfect record.

Robert Rodriguez Jr. failed to do his job at the scale but did so in the ring with a 2nd round stoppage win over Servin in their ESPN-televised opener Thursday evening at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Flores was down early in round two and doing his best to defend himself along the ropes when the fight was stopped at 2:48 of that same round.

Drama preceded the bantamweight prelim when Rodriguez–a Texas-bred southpaw now based out of Riverside, California—came in more than two pounds above the contracted limit at Wednesday’s pre-fight weigh-in. Servin—a career junior bantamweight—agreed to move forward with the fight, his first televised appearance.

The 23-year old from Phoenix held his own in a competitive opening round that saw both boxers feel their way around the ring. Rodriguez dialed up the heat in round two, connecting with a straight left downstairs before coming up top with a right hand to force Flores to the canvas.

Action continued, with Flores appearing to have regained his faculties but struggling to turn the tide. Rodriguez went on the attack, landing a flurry along the ropes. Hindsight suggests that Flores deserved to hear the bell to end the round, but referee Robert Hoyle chose to err on the side of caution in stopping the contest.

Rodriguez improves to 8-0-1 (4KOs); Servin suffers his first career defeat in falling to 9-1-1 (3KOs).

The bout served as part of a five-fight telecast headlined by a makeshift main event between unbeaten junior lightweight prospect Gabriel Flores Jr. (17-0, 6KOs) and Miami-based Nicaraguan lightweight Josec Ruiz (21-2-3, 14KOs).
