Robeisy Ramirez has certainly made the most of an otherwise undesirable situation during the pandemic.

The 26-year old Cuban southpaw picked up his fifth win of 2020 following a 6th round stoppage of Colombia’s Brandon Valdes in their ESPN+ preliminary bout Saturday evening on ESPN+ from The Bubble at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

No knockdowns were scored, but a late round flurry by Ramirez left Valdes unable to defend himself unable to defend himself in forcing referee Russell Mora to intervene at 2:49 of round six.

The opening round saw both boxers establish their presence. Ramirez worked his jab and followed with crisp left hands. Valdes stood his ground, remaining at close quarters and managed to catch Ramirez with a right uppercut and a check left hook in separate exchanges. Ramirez showed a sturdy chin, taking the shots and countering with a straight left hand.

Action slowed in round two and thereafter, which fully worked to Ramirez’s advantage as a traditional counterpuncher. Valdes struggled to get off his punches in round two, resulting in a stern talk from his corner in between rounds. The 22-year old Colombian did his best to adapt, though Ramirez managed to remain a step ahead in rounds three and four almost exclusively via jabs and counter lefts.

Valdes worked in combination in round five, with Ramirez picking off most of the incoming and shooting left hands in return. Ramirez targeted the body in round six, though strangely it was Valdes who wound up losing a point for a low blow in the frame.

The deduction proved moot, as Ramirez took the fight out of the judges’ hands. Valdes found himself trapped in a corner, with Ramirez unloading with punches to the point of Mora jumping in and physically throwing the Cuban featherweight to prevent further punishment.

Ramirez advances to 6-1 (4KOs) with the win, his fourth straight in The Bubble. His run includes having avenged the lone loss of his career, having soundly outpointed Adan Gonzalez earlier this summer, 11 months after suffering a stunning points loss in his pro debut last August.

Valdes falls to 13-2 (7KOs), suffering his second straight defeat.

Ramirez claimed two Olympic Gold medalists for his native Cuba in 2012 London and 2016 Rio. The latter came in a win over Shakur Stevenson (14-0, 8KOs), now an unbeaten former featherweight titlist who headlines Saturday’s show versus Toka Kahn Clary (28-2, 19KOs).
