Double Cuban Olympic gold medallist Robeisy Ramirez turned in a fine display to stop Eric Donovan in the third round on the Taylor-Catterall in Glasgow.

Ramirez, who beat Shakur Stevenson in his second Olympic final in Rio in 2016, dropped Donovan in the first round with a whipping left that seemed to catch the Irishman off balance.

Donovan’s problems increased in the second round as he was cut over the right eye by a left uppercut, while Ramirez walked him down and forced Donovan to box out of his comfort zone to stay in it.

Ramirez stepped on the gas in the third, as he started loading up on left hooks. Less than a minute into the round, the Cuban landed a left uppercut and a right hook that had Donovan backing off. Then he landed a hard left hook to the side of the feet that badly hurt Donovan as he fell sideways against the ropes.

The Cuban followed up with another left than Donovan didn’t seem to see as referee Victor Loughlin jumped in to stop the fight, just as the Irishman went down to the floor.

It was Ramirez’s ninth win in a row, after suffering a shock loss on his debut, while Donovan suffered his second loss in 16, having been stopped by Zelfa Barrett in 2020. The time was 1:04 of the third round.

“I feel great, we had an excellent camp and the performance showed,” Ramirez said.

“I said in every single interview this week that Robeisy Ramirez s a changed fighter and I came here to show the best version of me and the UK fans saw it tonight. I’m really excited what the future holds for Robeisy Ramirez.”
