After scoring a surprising victory over former Middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez, many wondered how Miguel Cotto would follow up his history making win which made him the first Puerto Rican fighter to win titles in four different weight classes.

Top Rank had informed Cotto would return before the end of the year on a December 13th date with an opponent yet to be determined. BoxingScene however was advised by Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach that Cotto had chosen to pass up on the December date and would not be fighting again in 2014.

“It looks like we’re going to pass on that date because Miguel did not want to go to the Philippines to train and share camps with Manny. It’s just spreading things a little bit too thin with me” Roach would tell BoxingScene.

Instead now Cotto and Roach will set their eyes on a showdown with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez for next year.

“We’re looking for [Saul “Canelo”] Alvarez down the line. It’s a fight we want and I hope we can put that together” informed Roach.

Freddie will turn his attention solely to Manny Pacquiao who will once again train in the Philippines much like he did in 2013 when he also fought in Macau China.
