Radio City Music Hall, New York City - In a highly anticipated super bantamweight unification, Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0, 8KOs), a two-time Olympic gold medal winner, showed his class with a boxing exhibition to shock Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20KOs) to win a twelve round unanimous decision to unify the WBA/WBO titles. The scores were 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111 - in a fight where Rigondeaux appeared to win a lot more rounds than he was given credit for.

In the first round, Donaire went a big left hook but Rigondeaux sent him back with a good counter. Rigondeaux landed several more left hands before the round closed. The second was more of a chess match with Rigondeaux possibly landing the better shots. Rigondeaux continued to counter and outbox Donaire, taking the Filipino champion to school. Donaire landed a good right at the end but took two two shots for his trouble in the final ten seconds.

Rigondeaux started fast in the first minute of the fourth. At the end Donaire landed a huge hook on Rigondeaux, who fired back with even bigger punches on Donaire to answer back. The fifth was a little closer, with Rigondeaux being quicker and landing better. The sixth was more the same, with Rigondeaux outboxing Donaire.

Donaire started getting more active at the start of the seventh. Both of Donaire's eyes were swelling up at this point and he was trying hard to land something hard but could not. Rigondeaux continued to outbox Donaire, using speed and defense in the eight and the ninth rounds.

Donaire scored a big knockdown in the first minute of the tenth round as Rigondeaux got a little too close and he caught the Cuban boxer straight down the middle. Rigondeaux went defensive as Donaire tried to follow-up with more hard shots. Donaire was not really able to get off with anything else as Rigondeaux used his defense to get back into form.

The eleventh round was closer than most. Rigondeaux caught Donaire at the start of the twelfth and he appeared to badly hurt Donaire's right eye bad. Rigondeaux went on the attack and was landing hard shots on Donaire with both hands. Donaire was staying away and was trying to survive until the bell.
