In what may have been the final fight of his pro career, former world champion Ricky Burns (45-8-1, 17 KOs) battered and stopped veteran Willie Limond eight rounds at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow.

Burns, 40-years-old was in full control from the start of the fight and punished Limond until the referee had seen enough and called the fight at the end of eight.

Limond, 44-years-old, announced his retirement in the aftermath.

"I'm done. A short answer, finished. I've got to pass the baton, I can't keep doing this. But I did enjoy the experience. It was good getting back in about it, it just wasn't good taking all those shots," Limond said.

Burns has won two in a row since losing a twelve round majority decision to Lee Selby in 2019, but he's been very inactive over the last few years.

While he's more than happy to walk away from the sport at this point in his career, he's also willing to fight once more if the right opportunity comes along.

"I always said I would have loved to get that one final fight in Glasgow," Burns told BBC Scotland.

"I've always said, when I stop boxing, I never ever want to come back. I want to go out on my own terms. If this is to be it, I'm happy. Who knows. I've said that's me and I can retire and be happy. But, if that phone goes, it's a decent fight and my missus gives me the green light, it's game on."
