Unbeaten Mexican contender Rey Vargas was confirmed by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman as the official challenger for the World Boxing Council's featherweight title.

A new WBC featherweight champion was crowned this past Saturday night, when Filipino puncher Mark Magsayo won a close twelve round majority decision over longtime Gary Russell Jr. - who held the belt for over six years.

During the traditional Tuesday meeting with the local media in Mexico, Sulaiman, unable to be present due to a commitment, communicated a message through Víctor Silva, who was notified that Vargas is the official challenger.

Both Vargas and Magsayo were present at the meeting, as well as the coach of the Mexican boxer, Nacho Beristáin.

Vargas himself had recently discussed in an interview with Diario de los Deportistas about this scenario, because he was tabbed as the mandatory challenger during the WBC' annual convention that was held last November in Mexico City.

"We are the mandatory challenger, Mr. Sulaiman has just confirmed it. We knew we were going straight to the title, we just waited to find out who would win that fight between Russell and Magsayo and since Magsayo is the new champion, then we are going against him," Vargas said to ESTO.

“[The title shot] comes to me at an excellent time, during a great period of my life, with greater maturity, now I enjoy things more, I commit myself more, I have always been a perfectionist, but now I'm even more so... all of this has taken me to where I am and the goal is to be a new world champion."
