Veteran referee Jack Reiss had his hands full, as the third man in the ring in the wild rematch between Youtube stars KSI and Logan Paul.

KSI won a six round split decision over Paul in a cruiserweight contest which took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The scores were 57-54 and 56-55 for KSI, and 56-55 for Paul.

But there was cloud of controversy over the fourth round, during a sequence where Paul scored a knockdown of KSI.

Paul clipped KSI with a good uppercut, but then held his head in place to land a second uppercut. KSI went down, and then Paul hit him with another punch while he was down on the mat.

KSI got to his feet, on unsteady legs, and was given up to five minutes to recover.

According to Reiss, he felt the right decision to make was to count the knockdown - and then take two points away from Paul - one point for hitting and holding and a second point for hitting while the opponent is still down.

In doing so, he felt the two fighters were now on an even playing field.

"Please watch the replay. So Logan hit him with a really good shot, an uppercut, and then Logan grabbed KSI behind the head and hit him with a second shot while he was holding him," Reiss explained to BoxingScene.com.

"But KSI was already stumbling from that first one and going down and then when he was on the ground Logan hit him with a straight punch. There’s no such punch in boxing from 12 to 6 and Logan hit him, it’s a felony [as far as a boxing infraction].

"So originally I said, 'no, no, no, stop, time' and I was going to do something. I gave [KSI] as much time as he needed to get back to his full strength and recover to level the playing field and then I told [the ringside judges] to score the knockdown and then take away two points for the illegal blow and the playing field was then leveled.

"Two points for the knockdown, two points he took away. Whoever goes out and wins that round, wins that round. Trying to keep it fair and keep it going, but it was a mess."

Paul complained in the aftermath, explaining to reporters that Reiss should have only given him a warning.

"Well I warned him in the dressing room, both fighters, to stay off the back of the head and stay off the kidney. And like I said there’s no such punch in boxing where you punch straight down and that was initial and it had effect because it was a wounded fighter. And again, to level the playing field, I thought two points would be best, get them back up and get them going," Reiss said.

Earlier in the fight, there appeared to be a clean knockdown scored by KSI, but Reiss waved it off as a slip.

"KSI was throwing some very wide, looping punches and I felt the shot that hit [Paul] hit him a little bit behind the ear and Logan went to hold him and KSI stepped back and he almost like pulled him down, so it wasn’t a clean knockdown, so I just waved it off. He got up okay and we were good to go," Reiss said.
