“Speedy” Rashidi Ellis will be returning to the ring soon.

The well-regarded, undefeated welterweight from Lynn, Massachusetts, announced on his Instagram Friday that he had joined Premier Boxing Champions. Ellis had been out of the ring for nearly a year and a half because of a contractual dispute with his promoter Golden Boy.

That issue appears to have been resolved.

“It’s official,” Ellis’ post read. “We are ready for big fights!”

Known for his quick fists and boxing ability, “Speedy” last fought in October 2020 in what was arguably his most significant win to date: a 12-round unanimous decision win over then promotional stablemate Alexis Rocha at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California on the Jaime Munguia vs. Tureano Johnson undercard. The Rocha win has aged well for Ellis, given Rocha’s recent stoppage victory over Blair Cobbs at USC Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Oscar De La Hoya, the founder of Golden Boy, recently responded to a query regarding Ellis’ protracted layoff. De La Hoya said he tried at one point to offer Ellis a deal to fight Vergil Ortiz, the hard hitting Texan regarded as one of the crown jewels on the Golden Boy roster, but claimed that Ellis turned it down.

“We recently offered him a Vergil fight,” De La Hoya said on The DAZN Boxing Show. “If fighters are going to be turning down fights, there’s nothing I can do.”

Ellis (23-0, 14 KOs) figures to benefit from aligning himself with PBC, given PBC’s strength at welterweight. In addition to WBC and IBF 147-pound champion Errol Spence Jr. and WBA titlist Yordenis Ugas – the two will face each other April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – PBC also boasts former titlists in Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman, as well as rising names like Eimantas Stanionis.
