Qais Ashfaq has revealed that a change has been made to his team prior to boxing returning.

The WBA Continental super-bantamweight champion was last in action in November 2019 when he won the aforementioned title via technical decision.

Ashfaq (8-0, 3 KOs) outpointed Joe Ham at Manchester Arena, exclusively live on Sky Sports and DAZN, as part of the supporting cast to Katie Taylor’s win over Christina Linardatou for the latter’s WBO female super-lightweight title and Anthony Crolla’s farewell victory against Frank Urquiaga.

Ham was down in the third round but was cut in the sixth round before being stopped in the seventh by the referee Howard Foster.

The scores at the time of the stoppage, after just a second of the seventh round, were 70-64, 70-63 and 69-64 and Ashfaq had Kelvyn Travis in his corner.

But it has now been disclosed that Ashfaq, who was managed by Charlie Sims in another relationship that has now ended, will now be under the tutelage of Angel Fernandez.

“Kel and Charlie have played a massive part in my boxing journey in the pro ranks where I remain undefeated in eight bouts and achieved a WBA Continental title,” he said when revealing the news on social media. “I just want to show my appreciation to you both, from the bottom of my heart, and I can’t thank you guys enough for how you have helped me in the professional game thus far.”

Ashfaq, 27, joined Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing in February 2018 after initially inking promotional terms with David Haye’s Hayemaker Promotions.

“I feel now is the right time for myself to move on and freshen things up,” he added. “I’m excited for the next step in my career and believe my next moves are the right moves to help me fulfil my potential & dreams of becoming a world champion.

“I believe this is the best move for me at this stage to keep me progressing and I really look forward to working closely with him & the team [at Loughborough Sport].”
