Kalle Sauerland has compared trainer Peter Fury with famed soccer manager Pep Guardiola. 

Fury was recently appointed as head trainer to Matty Harris, joining the U.K. prospect following a knockout loss that left Harris’ record at 5-1, 4 KOs. Last July in Edinburgh, Scotland, Harris, a 24-year-old heavyweight up-and-comer, was saddled with the unexpected early-career loss by Ukrainian journeyman Konstiantyn Dovbyshchenko. 

Harris had his man down in the second round and appeared set to notch his sixth straight victory. However, the Ukrainian pushed the action, eventually scoring a stoppage in the dying seconds of the fifth round. 

Harris returns tomorrow night in Telford, England, on the undercard of Abass Baraou-Sam Eggington, taking on Belgium’s Amine Boucetta. In this bout, the man that led Tyson Fury to heavyweight glory against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 will stand beside him.

“We got some great guys on the undercard,” Sauerland said to boxingscene.com. “Matty Harris will be returning with Peter Fury in his corner. Big addition, Peter Fury. He’s the Pep Guardiola of boxing.”

Fury guided his nephew Tyson to the lineal heavyweight world title in Düsseldorf, Germany, with a wide points victory in Klitschko’s adopted backyard.

Guardiola currently manages Premier League champions Manchester City. He is considered one of the greatest soccer tacticians of all time and has won countless domestic and European honors with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. He is the only manager to win a continental treble twice.

“I think he’s a mastermind,” Sauerland said. “If you look at the Tyson Fury-Klitschko fight, it was a mastermind. Ten years you had people trying to knock Klitschko’s head off; they all thought he had a glass chin because he was knocked out three times in his career.

“[Fury] was the first trainer who said, ‘No, no, we are not going to knock his head off, we are going to outbox him.’ He boxed his ears off for 12 rounds; it changed heavyweight boxing. So with Peter Fury, we are happy to have him back on board.”

Fury currently trains his son, U.K. heavyweight contender Hughie Fury, and undisputed super middleweight world champion Savannah Marshall.
