Shawn Porter takes his first step toward his goal of becoming a three-time welterweight titlist.

Making his 2020 debut, the former two-time title claimant will take Germany’s Sebastian Formella in a 12-round eliminator to determine the mandatory challenger for the WBC and IBF welterweight titlists.

Both belts are in the possession of Errol Spence, against whom Porter dropped a 12-round split decision in their Fight of the Year-level unification bout last September.

Porter (30-3-1, 17KOs) made weight for his first fight since then, coming in at 146.6 pounds. Formella (22-0, 10KOs) weighed a trim and ready 146 pounds for his United States debut, with the bout taking place in a crowdless Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles (Saturday, FOX, 8:00pm ET).

Prior to his heartbreaking loss to Spence, Porter outpointed Yordenis Ugas for his lone successful title defense last March in Carson, California. The bout came six months after defeating former two-division titlist Danny Garcia to claim the vacant WBC welterweight title.

Porter previously served as IBF titlist, defeating Devon Alexander in December 2013. The Akron, Ohio native—who now lives and trains in Las Vegas—also made one defense of that belt—a 4th round knockout of former two-division titlist Paul Malignaggi—before dropping a 12-round decision to Kell Brook in August 2016.

Formella fights for the second time in 2020, having outpointed Roberto Arriaza over 12 rounds this past January in his hometown of Hamburg, Germany. The bout marked the first defense of his prestigious IBO welterweight title, which he will retain regardless of what happens on Saturday.

In the chief support, unbeaten junior middleweight Sebastian Fundora faces divisional gatekeeper Nathaniel Gallimore (21-4-1, 17KOs) in a 10-round bout.

The 6’6” Fundora (14-0-1, 9KOs)—locally based in Coachella, California—weighed 153.5 pounds for his first fight since a 10-round win over unbeaten Daniel Lewis this past February in Las Vegas.

Gallimore checked in at 152.8 pounds, as he looks to reverse his luck; the Chicago-based Jamaican product has dropped three of his last four starts, including a 10-round decision to Erickson Lubin last October. The fight served a greater purpose, as Gallimore and Lubin sparred together for their upcoming bouts.

Opening the Fox telecast, 20-year old junior middleweight Joey Spencer (10-0, 7KOs) faces Davenport, Iowa’s Shawn West (5-1, 3KOs) in a scheduled six-round contest.

Spencer—originally from Linden, Michigan but who is now based in Union City, California—weighed 155.8 pounds, while West hit the scale at 154.6 pounds.
