Grand Hotel Tijuana, Mexico - In a light heavyweight contest, Mario Cazares (13-0, 5 KO's) pulled off a six round technical unanimous decision over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (51-5-1, 33 KO's).

The fight was stopped early due to a cut sustained by Chavez Jr. The scores were 57-56, 59-54 and 57-56.

For Chavez Jr, it was his first bout since getting stopped in December 2019 by Daniel Jacobs - in a fight that was also stopped early when Chavez Jr. complained about a nose issue.

Cazares came out taking the fight to Chavez. He was landing quick shots to the head and body, using a stiff jab and throwing hard shots to follow-up. The second round got a lot more heated, as there was a lot of holding, fouls by both. Cazares lost a point for an intentional foul. Chavez was starting to dig more to the body.

Cazares was able to put together solid punches in the third round. Cazares continued to land the better punches in the fourth, with Chavez not able to get off with most of his shots. The jab of Cazares was controlling the early potion of the fifth. Chavez dug to the body, but Cazares was often outworking him.

Cazares was unloading with punches at the start of the sixth and doing a job on Chavez. There may have been a clash of heads, where Chavez sustained a cut and then claimed that he was having trouble with the eye and the contest was stopped by the ringside doctor.
