Mexico's former world champion Edgar Sosa will rise to the ring tomorrow at the StubHub Center in Carson, California to cause an upset and stop the streak of Mexican victims at the hands of Filipino Donnie Nietes in a classic Mexico vs Philippines showdown, which can be seen live on Azteca 7.
Nietes (38-1-4, 22 KOs) and Sosa (52-9, 30 KOs) will fight for the WBO Intercontinental flyweight belt over the twelve round distance.
Both former world champions overcame smooth engagement with the scale at the official weighin, which took place at Eagle Rock Plaza Mall. Nietes came in at 112-pounds, while Sosa was 11.5-pounds.
37-year-old Sosa closed his intensive preparations of more than two months last weekend. He went twelve hard rounds during sparring sessions in camp.
"I am happy to have passed the test of going a hard twelve rounds. We did a lot of preparation, just refining the details and took care of the weight and maintained the belief of winning," Sosa said.
Sosa also expressed know the strengths of Nietes - "He's quick on the counterattack. I must be cautious of his right hands and hooks to the body. He is a very skilled fighter with the waist, very good with his hands and legs. The truth is he is a complete fighter, but I know that I can win if I apply pressure, use clever boxing, aggressive fighting, go round after round."
Nietes, 34-years-old, recently resigned his WBO junior flyweight belt to invade the flyweight division and he's looking for top opponents and attractive purses.
Since 2009, Nietes has been battering fighters from Mexico with 16 of his 15 opponents coming from the country - including great fighters as Francisco Rodriguez, Moses 'Moi' Fuentes, Sammy Gutierrez, among others.
