The scores were 114-114, 116-112 and 117-111 for Garcia.

The action was close in the first, with Benavidez using the jab a lot. Garcia was going to the body often with combinations. In the second, Garcia was letting go of his punches more often. He was outlanding Benavidez in close action. In the third, Benavidez was doing well with landed punches to the head and body. Garcia was sticking to the jaba nd was looking for openings.

Benavidez was not letting his hands go enough in the fourth, as he was allowing Garcia to outwork him for most of the round. Benavidez rallied during spots, but not enough. Garcia continued to outwork Benavidez during the fifth round action. The sixth was close, as both were landing punches. Garcia was very focused on digging to the body. The seventh saw Garcia dominate the action with Benavidez not being very action.

Benavidez did better in the eight, as he was able to land a few, but was still being outworked. In the ninth, Benavidez did very well as he was able to connect more often to the head and body. Garcia bounced back in the tenth, when he outworked Benavidez over the three minutes. Benavidez tried to get more active during the eleventh, with Garcia outhustling him with boxing and movement.

In the twelfth and final round, Benavidez came out jabbing but not going for the knockout. Garcia continued to box and move. He was landing combinations and moving for most of the final minute as Benavidez was unable to counter.
