Flyweight contender Jonathan ‘Bomba’ Gonzalez was well within the prescribed 7-day weight limit for his upcoming flyweight showdown with former two-division champ Giovani Segura. The bout takes place on August 17 in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

As is customary with all regional title fights governed by the Puerto Rico Boxing Commission, Gonzalez was required to hit the scales no heavier than five percent above the contracted weight, or 117.6 lb. The unbeaten Puerto Rican came in closer to the actual fight weight, hitting the scales at a trim and ready 114.75 lb. during Friday’s 7-day pre-fight weigh-in.

Even Gonzalez was surprised at how close he was to the flyweight limit.

“The weight I got today shows the work we are doing for Giovani Segura. We are focused in this fight and how important is for my career”, Gonzalez (13-0, 11KO) said after the pre weigh in. “We expected to be in 115 or 116 pounds, but we weighed 114. That is good, because I made weight comfortable while (not skipping any) of my meals.”

No pre-fight weight was offered for Segura, who is not yet in Puerto Rico.

Gonzalez and Segura will fight for the WBO Latino flyweight title, putting the winner one step closer towards a possible future title shot. The current WBO flyweight champ is Juan Francisco Estrada.

Preparation for next week’s bout – which headlines an independent pay-per-view show to be carried by DirecTV – included workouts with fellow Boricua and former two-division champ Juan Manuel ‘JuanMa’ Lopez. Friday’s workout wrapped around the weigh-in featured shadow boxing, pad and heavy bag work and jump rope.

“Tomorrow, we are going on our long run; next week is all the work to make weight,” Gonzalez said.
