With the Tokyo Olympics finally here, Paddy Barnes discusses his incredible time at the Olympics, where he competed for Ireland at Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016, winning two bronze medals in the process.

Can you describe what your Olympic Journey was like, and how did you feel after you were picked?

Barnes: “The Olympics is a long hard slog. They only happen every four years so when the qualification process comes along you need to be on your game and be on your very best, doing so helps you qualify for the Olympics.

“The qualifiers themselves only happen every four years, so you have one chance every four years to be at your best for 10 days. Just do your utmost and leave no stone unturned. Prepare properly, as these 10 days can change your life.”

What were some of your memorable experiences at the Olympic Village?

Barnes: “Some of my most memorable experiences at the Olympic Village was the facilities on offer, and walking around with 10,000 athletes, all of whom are the very best in the world at that time.

“You’re rubbing shoulders with these people, and it’s incredible. There is also 24/7 free McDonald’s at every village, which was unbelievable for me!”

What advice can you give to the Olympians in Tokyo?

Barnes: “My advice for the Tokyo Olympics would be first and foremost, just enjoy yourself because it is extremely hard to get there.

“It’s very rare to be an Olympian, and as I said before, only 10,000 athletes in the whole world get to compete at an Olympic Games, so you’re one of the lucky elite athletes that have qualified. Just enjoy it and do your absolute best.”
