The Irish Elite squad claimed five gold and three silver medals at the Ostrava Grand Prix in the Czech Republic.

 

Darren O'Neill, Jason Quigley, Sean Turner, John Joe Nevin and Willie McLaughlin triumphed in Ostrava city on Saturday.

 

Eric Donovan, Con Sheehan and Ray Moylette settled for silver after narrowly losing their finals on a day when the entire eight-man Irish squad competed in eight of the nine finals.

 

European silver-medalist O'Neill, who moved up from middleweight to light-heavyweight for the tournament, beat Evegeny Dishchenko of Russia 1-0.

 

And European Youth champion Quigley convincingly saw off the challenge of Vardan Besaljan of the Czech Republic.

 

Nevin, who won bronze for Ireland at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan, Willie McLaughlin, who reached the quarter- finals at the same tournament, and Sean Turner recorded wins over Belarus, Tunisia and the Czech Republic.

 

Meanwhile, Grangecon light-welterweight Ross Hickey, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool, claimed gold at the Tammer Multi-Nations in Tampere, Finland today with a 2-1 victory over Belfin Bohoist of the Philippines.

 

David Oliver Joyce, Ryan Lindberg, Declan Geraghty and Roy Sheehan won bronze at the 22-nation Finnish tournament.

 

The Irish Ostrava Grand Prix squad arrived home this afternoon. The Irish Tammer Multi-Nations squad are due to arrive home via Dublin airport at 4pm tomorrow.
