LAS VEGAS – Orestes Velazquez remained undefeated Saturday against the most experienced opponent he has faced in seven professional fights.

The 30-year-old Cuban beat Argentinean veteran Marcelino Lopez unanimously in their 10-round welterweight fight on the David Benavidez-Caleb Plant undercard at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Judges Patricia Morse Jarman (99-91) and Don Trella (99-91) scored nine rounds apiece for Velazquez and judge Chris Migliorie (97-93) scored seven rounds for the winner.

Showtime Sports streamed Velazquez’s victory on its YouTube channel, which took place two bouts before the pay-per-view portion of the Benavidez-Plant undercard was scheduled to begin.

Velazquez, a Miami resident, went the distance for the first time as a pro (7-0, 6 KOs). Buenos Aires’ Lopez (37-2-1, 22 KOs) had his five-fight winning streak snapped.

Velazquez backed up Lopez with a right hand that connected with just under 50 seconds remaining in the 10th and final round, but he never seemed to hurt Lopez in their bout. Lopez was further behind on the scorecards than perhaps he thought and needed a knockout in that final round to win.

Lopez’s right hand kept Velazquez from coming forward with just over 30 seconds on the clock in the eighth round.

A sweeping right hand by Lopez made Velazquez retreat with 45 seconds to go in the seventh round.

An overhand right by Lopez backed up Velazquez with just over 10 seconds remaining in the sixth round. Lopez had a cut around his left eye by the sixth round, but it hadn’t affected his vision to that point in the fight.

Lopez landed a right hand that made Velazquez hold him about 55 seconds into the fourth round. Lopez landed another right to the side of Velazquez’s head with just over a minute to go in the third round.

Velazquez’s right knocked Lopez into the ropes during the middle minute of the second round. Backed against the ropes, Lopez landed a hard right hand a few seconds before the bell sounded to end a first round that otherwise lacked action.
