Jarico O’Quinn out-worked and out-pointed Oscar Vasquez on Friday night.

The unbeaten bantamweight prospect withstood Vasquez’s pressure, often fought effectively moving backward and was the more accurate, active puncher in an eight-round fight Showtime televised as the opener of a “ShoBox: The New Generation” telecast from WinnaVegas Casino & Resort in Sloan, Iowa. The gritty Vasquez pushed O’Quinn and displayed durability, but the busier, quicker O’Quinn clearly won.

All three judges – Mike Walsh, Steve Weisfeld and Barry Wolff – scored the fight 79-73 for Detroit’s O’Quinn (14-0-1, 8 KOs). Vasquez (15-3-1, 3 KOs), of Sun Valley, Nevada, won only one round on each of the judges’ cards and slipped to 0-2-1 in his past three fights.

According to Showtime’s unofficial punch stats, O’Quinn connected on 250-of-704 overall punches, 52 more than Vasquez (198-of-474). Vasquez landed only four jabs and jabbed just 13 times in the entire fight, according to those statistics.

A right hand by O’Quinn jolted Vasquez and knocked him into the ropes when there was approximately one minute to go in the eighth round. O’Quinn fell to the canvas with 26 seconds remaining in the fight, but referee Adam Pollack rightly ruled it a slip.

A left hook by O’Quinn snapped back Vasquez’s head and moved him backward with about 50 seconds to go in the seventh round. An overhand right by O’Quinn stunned Vasquez and made him retreat just before the bell sounded to end the seventh round.

Vasquez connected with a right and then a left about 45 seconds into the sixth round. O’Quinn began backing up Vasquez in the final minute of the sixth round, when he landed several right hands.

Vasquez landed two short right hands about a minute into the fifth round. Vasquez also landed a short left hook with about 25 seconds to go in the fifth.

O’Quinn and Vasquez spent the third and fourth rounds landed short shots from close distances on one another. O’Quinn’s punches seemed to have more on them, but Vasquez was the aggressor and continually kept O’Quinn on his back foot.

Vasquez landed a hard left and then a right within the final 10 seconds of the second round. O’Quinn did good body work earlier in the second.

Vasquez caught O’Quinn with a right hand to the side of his head with just over a minute to go in the first round. Several seconds later, Vasquez landed a left and a right that backed O’Quinn into the ropes.
