Helaman Olguin appeared exhausted halfway through their six-round heavyweight bout, but two judges still thought he did enough to defeat Adam Stewart on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

The 6-feet-3, 290-pound Olguin pulled off a mild upset against Stewart, who lost a majority decision. Judge Glenn Trowbridge scored their fight a draw (57-57), but he was overruled by judges Tim Cheatham and Ricardo Ocasio, each of whom scored Olguin a 58-56 winner of their very competitive fight on the Andrew Moloney-Joshua Franco undercard.

The 36-year-old Olguin (8-3, 3 KOs), a southpaw from South Jordan, Utah, extended his winning streak to seven.

The 6-feet-6, 232-pound Stewart suffered the first loss of a pro career the former college football player launched four years ago. The 31-year-old Stewart (8-1-1, 5 KOs) had won six straight fights since settling for a four-round draw with Cashton Young (3-2-1, 1 KO) in February 2017.

Olguin’s win came in the first of four fights ESPN televised from MGM Grand Conference Center.

Olguin landed a straight left hand with about 1:15 remaining in the sixth round. Olguin connected with two more left hands just before the final round ended, but Stewart wasn’t affected by any of those shots.

An exhausted Olguin swung wildly and missed multiple times in the fifth round. He tried tying up Stewart, who landed a short, straight right hand with just over 20 seconds left in the fifth round.

Olguin connected with a right hook Stewart acknowledged just before the fifth round ended.

Olguin and Stewart spent much of the fourth round in clinches referee Robert Hoyle had to break up. An out-of-shape Olguin obviously was tired by that point in the fight.

Stewart drilled Olguin with a right hand as they broke from a clinch at the halfway point of the third round. Stewart connected with a short, right uppercut inside later in the third.

A looping left hand by Olguin made Stewart hold him with about 40 seconds remaining in the second round. Olguin’s straight left hand stung Stewart just before the second round concluded.

By then, Olguin seemed confident he was more skillful and quicker than Stewart, who weighed in nearly 60 pounds lighter than him.

A cut opened beneath Stewart’s right eye just before the midway mark of the first round. An accidental head-butt caused Stewart’s cut.

A right hook by Olguin landed to the side of Stewart’s head and knocked him backward with about 20 seconds to go in the opening round.
