Nicola Adams revealed she has been sparring with Kid Galahad ahead of the first defence of her WBO flyweight title on Friday.

Adams defends the title against Maria Salinas, from Mexico, at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

The 26-year-old double Olympic champion now trains with Dominic Ingle in Sheffield, having previously been trained by Virgil Hunter in California, but Galahad, who lost a spilt points decision to Josh Warrington for the IBF featherweight title in June, is one of several gym-mates she has been getting rounds with in the build-up to this fight.

“Me and Dominic have been working on a few tactics for the fight, I’ve been sparring a few good lads in the gym,” Adams said at a press conference at the BT Sport studios in East London. “Kid Galahad is really good and really difficult to hit. If I can land a few punches on him, I can land a few on anybody. I feel ready, I feel confident, everything has gone to plan.”

Adams has not boxed in nearly 12 months when she claimed the interim WBO title with a points win over Isabel Millan. She then inherited the WBO title when champion Arely Mucino was unable to defend it due to injury.

“I feel good to be back,” Adams said. “I’ll be nervous on fight night, I’m nervous for every fight.

“If I wasn’t feeling nervous going into a fight, I’d feel like I wasn’t taking my opponent seriously. Those nerves make me sharp, keep me alert.”

Salinas, 30, will be making her fifth attempt to win a world title, most recently losing a split decision to Mucino 12 months ago. She has a reputation as a come-forward fighter, which Adams says will suit her.

“That’s perfect for me,” Adams said. “The best fighters to fight are the ones who stand right in front of you, you don’t have to go looking for them. You always know exactly where they are going to be and that is right in front of your face.

“If she boxes I’ve got a gameplan for that, if she come to fight, I’ve got a gameplan for that. I’m strong, I’m fit, I’m healthy, I’m ready to go and I want that win more than anybody else does.

If she is successful on Friday, Adams says that she wants to unify the world title as soon as possible.

“I wanted new challenges, new goals for myself and now I have a lot of goals as a pro, I want to unify the flyweight division and this is the first step,” she said. “Now I have got this world title I hope I can get the other champions over the line.”
