Earlier today, Polish reporter Mateusz Borek stated that Damian Jonak has declined an offer to face James Kirkland in an HBO televised fight scheduled for April 26th in New York.  Jonak had been the leading contender to face Kirkland but he apparently wasn't happy with the purse being offered.

After hearing the news, BoxingScene.com reached out to junior middleweight contender Willie Nelson to gauge his interest in the fight.  Nelson said that not only is he interested in the fight, but that he wanted to call out the hard hitting Texan.

"I am hoping that I can get the fight because I have seen James Kirkland fight and I feel that styles make matchups.  That is just one of those fights that I have wanted for years.  Kirkland is a fighter that everyone thinks highly of.  He is just one of the guys I have wanted to fight since I started at 147 pounds.  I have always felt that I can beat him.  Hopefully after calling him out and letting it be known we want the fight, then we can make it happen," said Nelson.

The 6'3" Nelson said that he has seen a lot of Kirkland's fights and feels his style would match up very well.  He said that Kirkland had a perfect game plan for his most recent fight and exploited Glen Tapia's weaknesses perfectly.

"In that fight I feel he pretty much played the role of a veteran in there with a young fighter.  Kirkland knew what he had to do.  He knew he had to keep the pressure on him because he had never been in with a fighter like Kirkland before.  He knew the kid was going to come out blasting, throwing big shots and try to put him down but Glen Tapia is not known for being too much of a puncher and Kirkland knew that and he did what he needed to do," Nelson told BoxingScene.com.
