A prospect guided by Canelo Alvarez’s trainer remained undefeated on the Mexican superstar’s undercard Saturday night, but he had to work hard for his 11th professional win.

Featherweight Nathan Rodriguez ultimately did enough to out-point Alexander Mejia by majority decision in their 10-round featherweight fight on the Alvarez-John Ryder undercard at Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico. Two judges scored their fight for Rodriguez, who won 96-94 and 96-93 on two scorecards, but he settled for a draw on the other card (95-95).

The 18-year-old Rodriguez, of Pico Rivera, California, improved to 11-0 (7 KOs). The more experienced Mejia (19-6, 8 KOs), of Managua, Nicaragua, has lost four of his past five fights.

Rodriguez began the 10th and final round aggressively, as if he sought a knockout. He came forward and threw a variety of power punches, many of which landed cleanly and prevented Mejia from doing much offensively.

Rodriguez rocked Mejia with a left hook that stopped him in his tracks with just over 10 seconds to go in the ninth round.

Mejia’s right landed about 1:20 into the ninth round, when he pressed the action and kept Rodriguez on his back foot. Rodriguez nailed Mejia with an overhand right 30 seconds into the ninth round.

Rodriguez popped his jab in the eighth round, but Mejia was the aggressor again during those three minutes.

Mejia pressured Rodriguez throughout the seventh round and landed some shots to his retreating opponent’s head and body.

Mejia had some success in the fifth round, but Rodriguez boxed well off his back foot during the sixth round.

Rodriguez countered Mejia with a left hook with just under a minute to go in the sixth round. Rodriguez later landed a left uppercut a few seconds before the sixth round ended.

Rodriguez caught Mejia with two left hooks to the body a little less than a minute into the fourth round. Mejia blasted Rodriguez with a right hand 30 seconds into the fourth round.

Rodriguez hammered Mejia with a left to the body a few seconds before the third round ended. Mejia caught Rodriguez with a left hook nearly two minutes into the third round.

Rodriguez’s right to Mejia’s body was effective with just under 25 seconds to go in the opening round. Rodriguez’s right hand wobbled Mejia about 1:05 into the first round.
