Naoko Fujioka fended off a stubborn challenge from Sulem Urbina to extend her historic title run.

The five-division and reigning WBA flyweight champion from Tokyo emerged victorious over Phoenix’s Urbina, claiming a ten-round majority decision in an entertaining title fight Friday afternoon at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

Judge Edward Hernandez had the bout 95-95, overruled by Fernando Villarreal (96-94) and Dr. Lou Moret (99-91) who scored in favor of the defending titlist.

The 45-year-old Fujioka—the only fighter ever from Japan to win titles in five weight divisions—fought for the first time in the United States, attempting the second defense of her flyweight title. The bout was her 14th title fight, matching the number of total pro fights for Urbina who offered a championship effort in the opening round. The superior movement of Urbina was the difference, able to keep Fujioka at her desired range and connecting with a long left hand in the best punch of the round.

Momentum never truly remained in one direction. Fujioka adapted and began to target the body. Urbina sought to neutralize her opponent’s attack by leaning on her chest and countering with left hooks, though Fujioka was able to detect the incoming and smartly avoid the line of fire.

Urbina connected with a pair of uppercuts in round four. Fujioka walked into the shots, moving past the sequence to unload with a flurry later in the frame including seven unanswered punches though most of them picked off by Urbina’s tight defense.

Fujioka put her foot on the gas in round five, once again letting her hands go in looking to outwork her challenger. Urbina remained composed during the exchanges but let her guard down long enough to eat a right hand after missing with one of her own.

Chants of ‘Su-Lem!’ filled the outdoor arena in round six, though it was Fujioka who controlled the action. The defending champ landed with a combination upstairs, driving back Urbina who adapted in time to land heavy return fire in the closing seconds of the round.

Fujioka applied pressure in round eight, landing a right hand on Urbina’s chin. The favor was returned later in the frame, with Urbina driving back Fujioka with a straight hand.

Urbina did her best to exploit Fujioka’s abandoning her defense, applying relentless pressure in the closing seconds of round nine. Competitive action saw the challenger push forward, landing a two-punch combination.

The tenth and final round began with Fujioka surging ahead immediately touching gloves with her opponent, launching a looping right hand and left hook. Urbina took the shots well, driving back Fujioka with a counter right hand. Fujioka used her jab as a range finder but couldn’t follow up with a clean power shot while Urbina smothered the legendary champion down the stretch.

Fujioka improves to 18-2-1 (7KOs) with the win, her eleventh on a title stage. The next move for the ageless champ could be a title unification bout with recently crowned WBC flyweight titlist Marlen Esparza, who worked the broadcast and was complimentary of her divisional peer while open to the idea of a two-title clash later this year.

Urbina suffers her second straight defeat, though her stock rising even as she falls to 12-2 (2KOs), The bout came nine months after Urbina dropped an eight-round decision to Esparza in a non-title fight last October.

Urbina-Fujioka aired live on Golden Boy and DAZN social media channels preceding a four-fight DAZN telecast headlined by a light heavyweight clash between Gilberto Ramirez (41-0, 27KOs) and Sullivan Barrera (22-3, 14KOs).
